The NFL off-season is almost over with OTAs underway already, but this is the time of year we begin to see players get major contract extensions. This is not uncommon for this part of the season but the wide receiver market is heating up. Jaylen Waddle got his major extension today with it being a 3 year, $84.75 million, and $76 million being guaranteed. A.J Brown got a 3 year, $96 million extension along with Amon-Ra St. Brown $120 million dollar extension. This were all major contracts that took place this off-season, but one guy remains in question. Justin Jefferson.
Jefferson is on his 5th year option with the Vikings, and he’s 24 years old. Jefferson has been one of the best wide receivers in the league with 5,889 yds and 30 tds. This begs the question of, “Why haven’t the Vikings pulled the trigger yet?” The team is in an interesting position at the moment, they have a rookie quarterback in JJ McCarthy, a new look offensive team, and Justin Jefferson’s contract. In my opinion, they have 2 options, either re-sign Jefferson or trade him multiple pieces. Trading him could be very lucrative for the team, Jefferson has lots of value and in league where passing is key, Jefferson’s stock shoots through the roof. But, this isn’t going to happen.
The team doesn’t need anything really, their defense is solid and if McCarthy plays great, they will be a solid team. Jefferson adds even more value than trading him him. So, they will re-sign him. And like many people believe, he will become the highest paid wide receiver ever. I believe he get $100 million guaranteed, and it will be a 6 year $162 million contract. Yes, insane, but it makes too much sense. He’s the star Minnesota has been missing since Moss and Peterson, so why not lock him up. Plus, the team controls McCarthy rights for 5 years and they can draft more weapons, build around Jefferson. I know this article was short but I feel like his extension will be very soon.
