Hunter | The NFL MVP Race

Published on 31 December 2024 at 01:38

With the last week of the NFL season upon us and the new year right around the corner, the MVP race is extremely tight. Multiple guys are up for the award and they all have viable cases to win the award, but, who should come out on top. The award has gone to a quarterback each since 2013 and this year it looks the same, or does it? So, with that in mind lets break down the candidates for the award.

The Outsiders

These guys are considered out of the race but should be mentioned due to the great year that they are having. Most of these guys are up for the other awards in the league.

Baker Mayfield

The Bucs QB has had a great year and looks to lead the Bucs to the playoffs. So lets look at his stats.

So, pretty solid numbers for a guy that has bounced around the league but has finally found a home in Tampa. The issue is the interceptions, 15. While not the worst it doesn't help that he has only thrown 39 touchdowns to add to that. He led the Bucs to a solid 9-7 record so far but, its a no from me.

Jayden Daniels

The rookie has put on a show this year and led Washington the playoffs, let's look at the stats.

Compared to Baker, the stats look not so great. But, this is a rookie QB we are talking about. And that's why he won't win. The rookie of the year award has been a lock for awhile with Daniels being the guy. He has led Washington to a 11-5 record so far and will look to take them on a deep playoff run. So, no MVP for him but he is going to take some hardware home.

Sam Darnold

Who would have thought? The Viking's QB has put together a solid surprise season, lets look at the stats.

Darnold has surprise many with his success with the Vikings. He was signed to be the backup to JJ McCarthy, but an injury to the rookie allowed for Darnold to take the starting role and he has. He has led the Vikings to a 14-2 record and looks to have success in the playoffs. As for MVP, no. Darnold has the success but the numbers aren't there. I see more of a comeback player of the year for him instead of MVP.

Jared Goff

The Lions QB has been putting on a show this year in a fantastic offense, so, how do the stats look?

The stats are a tad underwhelming to what I thought they would be. The Lions offense has mainly been built around the run game with Goff sometimes playing second fiddle in games. The stats are solid, but, just not enough for MVP. I do expect him to have a deep play off run this year, so, he might come away with some hardware.

The Contenders

These 4 guys are considered the favorites and all have a good case for the award.

Joe Burrow

I feel as if Burrow would be the clear favorite if it wasn't for the record of his team, because that states speak for themselves.

YDS 4641

TDS 42

INTS 8

The numbers are there and he has dominated the stats this year. Just one issue, his team is 8-8. Now, how much of that can you blame on him, not a lot. Burrow has made the games close and even kept them in the games at times. But a bad defense might just take away an MVP from Burrow.

Saquon Barkley

The running back switched teams this off-season and has never looked back.

YDS 2005

TDS 13

RUSHES 345

Barkley has put up MVP numbers and had joined the 2k club. He has been a bright spot on this Eagles team. The issue I see is that the 2 guys ahead of him have even better numbers. If you remove those 2 guys, Barkley would be a lock for the award, but, we have to wait and see if he is the first non-qb to win since 2012.

Lamar Jackson

Jackson is looking for his 3rd MVP trophy and the stats back it up.

YDS 3955

TDS 39

INTS 4

He has kept his turnovers low which is why I believe he has a shot at winning. Lamar hasn't been throwing the ball as much because he hasn't had to. Derrick Henry's addition has hurt his numbers some, but he still has a great shot at winning.

Josh Allen

The Buffalo QB has put on a clinic this year and that stats show it.

YDS 3731

TDS 28

INTS 6

He has been the favorite for months but the race is getting tighter because Allen has slowed down. Allen stats say one thing but the way he is making plays deserve a trophy alone. The guy has been unstoppable after a slow start on the year and has led the Bills to the playoffs once again. Him slowing down has made the race tighter and more interesting as the season slowly closes.
