With it being late summer and football is heating up, it is time for me to give my top 10 QBs heading into 2024-2025 season. As it is every year, there is a lot of controversy around who are the top top quarterbacks in the NFL. Especially since people value different things such as talent, system fit, playoff performance, and other variables. In my opinion, I value playoff success and talent slightly more then team fit, especially the guys higher up on my list because they have the ability to transform a team, whereas a QB who's skill set fits a team does not have the capabilities to turn another team around. With that being said here are my top 10 QBs (and 3 honorable mentions) in the National Football League:
Honorable Mentions:
Jared Goff - Detroit Lions - 13
Goff is the first honorable mention and coming in at #13. First off, I see the 3 honorable mention guys as interchangeable. Second, if Cousins was not coming off an achilles injury I would consider moving him ahead of Goff and onto this list. Goff does a lot of things well. He is a very good pure pocket passer, on one the mostly efficient passers in the NFL, he had a career best in passer grade (85.2 per PFF) and that could very easily improve. The only reason why he is not higher is because of his inability to stretch plays with his legs, as well as he has very solid pieces around him so it is hard to tell how valuable he is to his team. Overall, he is a very solid QB for the Lions who have hopes of being a contender for the upcoming year.
Brock Purdy - SF 49ers - 12
Brock Purdy is seen as one of, if not the most controversial person in QB rankings. His controversy to me stems from his draft pick number, dead last. Many believe that he is just the product of the Shanahan tree, somebody who has an average arm and just has NFL caliber accuracy. I do not agree with some of these statements. I do think that his hates stems from his draft number, but at the end of the day, you can make the argument that he is a top 3 passer in the NFL when it comes to accuracy. Is he elite, to me, no. However, his ability to stretch plays with his legs to me are extremely undervalued. Although he has every piece around him, I do believe that he is a very solid QB in the NFL and has the ability to win the Super Bowl for the upcoming years.
Aaron Rodgers - NY Jets - 11
Aaron Rodgers come in at the 11 spot. Rodgers who is coming off an Achilles injury 4 snaps into 2023 season, is out to prove that he can still do it. Rodgers is without a doubt one of the most talented QBs ever. Being extremely accurate, can move well enough to stretch plays, throw off balance, has cemented him as one of the most talented QBs ever. However not one of the best ever. With only one ring coming in 2011, he is out to prove that he is one of the greats. There are still questions around his mobility and his age. However, until he proves that he is not once his former self, it is hard to argue he is not a top 10 caliber QB.
Dak Prescott - Dallas Cowboys - 10
Dak Prescott is here in the 10. This is where it comes down to playoff performances. He had an incredible regular season, but very mediocre playoff performances tanks his ranking. He, very similar to Purdy had a ton of talent around him. Ceedee Lamb proved he is a top 5 WR in the NFL, as well as a top defense led my by Micah Parsons made them a Super Bowl Contender. Dak had his best season to date, but getting absolutely embarrassed by the Packers at home in the playoffs really destroys Dak's reputation especially after his incredible year. Although the Cowboy curse still continues, Dak is out to prove that he can maybe even be a top 5 QB.
Jordan Love - Green Bay Packers - 9
I'll be honest, I wanted to put Love higher. However I am sure being at 9 after your first year as a full-time starter is not to shabby. Love was incredible last year. Top 10 in total yards, top 5 in big-tome throws, and top 2 in passing touchdowns. With the moves the Packers made in the offseason, it is clear they are all in with Love. Surrounding him with an elite running back in Josh Jacobs takes some of the pressure off Love. His dual-threat abilities will flourish with the pieces they add and I fully expect the Packers to be very close to being a force in the NFC.
Justin Herbert - LA Chargers - 8
Justin Herbert has had an interesting start to his career. His physical's are great, big am, ability to move, good accuracy. But what has held him back? His coaching. I thought that having Kellen Moore as his OC would help Herbert a ton. A guy who loves to throw and gets the ball to his playmakers sounded like just what Herbert needed. It did not turn out that way. Herbert is slowly starting to slide down QB rankings, not because he doesn't have the talent, but because he has not been able to carry his team despite all the struggles. He has had the pieces, with Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler, they always had the ability to do it. However, with the absolute Meltdown against the Jaguars a couple of years ago, that has seemed to be the best chance for Herbert. The question is with his playmakers gone, can a great coach like Harbaugh provide stability for the talented gunslinger?
Jalen Hurts - Philadelphia Eagles - 7
Jalen Hurts coming off his best season a couple years ago was seen as a top 3 QB in the NFL, however with his OC Shane Steichen taking the HC job at the Colts, Hurts did not look the same. Although they started off great last year, the holes were very noticeable, and they never were able to fix them. Hurts struggled mightily at the end of last year. As a result his coordinators were fired and now incomes Kellen Moore who will try to revive Hurts. Hopefully the change of offense is what can put Hurts back into the top 3 QB conversation.
Matthew Stafford - LA Rams - 6
Matthew Stafford comes in a 6. One of the best pure passers in the league for the better part of the decade, he has not lost much of a step. Winning the Super Bowl a few years ago has cemented his legacy as a great pocket passer. The combination of him and McVay has been one of the bets coach-qb duos in the league. The thing that has impressed me the most with Stafford is that he has never been absolutely loaded with talent around him. He has always made the most of what he has had around him and as shown that he has been a great QB is whole career in the NFL.
C.J. Stroud - Houston Texans - 5
I know that putting a 2nd year guy in the top 5 is a little crazy. However, look at what Stroud did and look at what the Texans added. Stroud was absolutely unbelievable, with incredible performance after incredible performances and a playoff win as a rookie starting quarterback speaks volume to what Stroud will be. The additions the Texans made will also be huge. Adding an elite receiver in Stefon Digg's will only strengthen Strouds abilities as he continues to get better and better. With the young core the Texans have, the skys the limit for this young team.
Joe Burrow - Cincinnati Bengals - 4
Coming in next I have Joe Burrow. One of the best young QBs in the NFL, Burrow has been a elite QB, the only that has been holding him back is injuries. Rookie year when he did not have an O-Line he had a devastating season ending injury, and this year struggling to find his footing with the different types of injuries this year. The reason why I do have him so high is the run he went on a few years ago. Beating the best quarterback in the league a few years ago really helped Burrows stock and proved that he is one of the best QBs in the league. The combination of him and Ja'marr Chase is one of, if not the best QB-WR combo in the league. I expect big things from Burrow and the Bengals this year.
Lamar Jackson - Baltimore Ravens - 3
I want to say a few things about Jackson here. First, I know he had an incredible year last year, but this is when I value playoff success more then almost anything. Lamar Jackson is 1-3 and playoff games. That is awful considering the talent that he has and how good his team has been. Having one of the best defenses in the league year in and year out really tarnishes how bad Lamar Jackson has been in the playoffs. I know I seem really negative about Jackson. But I do have to split hairs when you are in the top 5. (I would have Burrow ahead if he was not coming off of injuries)
Josh Allen - Buffalo Bills - 2
At #2 I have probably the most talented play in the league right now, Josh Allen. Allen has it all, the mobility, the arm, the accuracy, the mind, his only thing is turnovers. This year will be interesting, without Diggs, where does Allen go? With the AFC getting even better, does Allen take the next step on the turnovers. That is the only thing holding him back. Overall, if Mahomes wasn't in the NFL, I would look at Josh Allen as the best QB in the NFL.
Patrick Mahomes - Kansas City Chiefs - 1
I think it is safe to say Mahomes as defied almost every single expectation he has encountered. It is insane, what he overcame last year with a bottom 10 WR core. Through all of the adversity he still showed why he is destined for greatness. He's has proven that he is the best by a huge margin as well as he has revolutionized the game of football. The creativity of him and Andy Reid have shown different ways to prevail odds, proving they are a top 5 Coach-Player duo of all time. There really is not a ton to say. The only thing really left for Mahomes is to chase Tom Brady. . . . . . if he isn't already there.
